Trend Intensity (TI)

Trend Intensity (TI) (or Trade intensity) is a momentum indicator designed to quantify both the direction and strength of a stock’s trend.

Rather than simply labeling a trend as “up” or “down,” TI gives you a sense of how strong the trend is in numerical terms.

This indicator was created by Pradeep Bonde (StockBee).

The TI is calculated using the 7/65 SMA combination. Once computed, TI gives insight into how dominant the short-term trend is relative to the longer-term context:

  • TI >= 1.05 indicates stronger bullish trend strength or momentum.
  • TI <= 0.95 indicates stronger bearish trend strength or momentum.
  • Other TI values (> 0.95 and < 1.05) indicates neutral/flat trend strength or momentum.

Why does Trend Intensity (TI) Matter?

  • Trend Confirmation: TI helps confirm whether a trend is more than a shallow or fleeting move. A rising TI above threshold gives more confidence to trend-followers.

  • Filtering Noise: Many price moves are just short-term wiggles. TI helps filter those out, focusing on those with enough strength to potentially lead to sustained moves.
